The Dundee Food Festival 2024 – A Fun Foodie Event

This summer, Dundee’s Slessor Gardens, City Square, and Waterfront will become a culinary and drink paradise, as the Dundee Food Festival announces its inaugural schedule of events.

The event’s organisers, Dundee City Council, are serving up a delectable array of community-led workshops and activities at many locations. Residents and guests are invited to partake in food, drink, play, and contemplate while discovering the delights of the city’s hospitality, food, and drink culture.

This two-day event, which is scheduled for Saturday, July 6, and Sunday, July 7, will have a number of local businesses participating and various places hosting events. The Waterfront, V&A Dundee, Discovery Point, City Square, Slessor Gardens, fringe events held across the city, and more are among them.

A few activities that are not to be missed are the street food market at V&A Dundee, the local producers showcase featuring cooking demonstrations at The Keiller Centre featuring Kitchen Press, Jim’s Delhi, and Lyndsey Kitchen, and the herb and flower arrangement workshops presented by Verdant Works.

Children can participate in free events throughout the family-friendly weekend, such as ScrapAntics and the entertaining educational programmes offered by the Dundee Science Centre in Slessor Gardens.

Little ones will be entertained by food vendors, figures on stilts, street performers, live music, and more at the main festival core, which is located in City Square.

On Saturday, July 6 from 5-8 p.m., The Discovery will host a beer and toastie night with local businesses LAW Brewing Co. and Strathearn Food Co. for individuals who want to sip on alcoholic beverages.

Bakers who are interested should not miss the free class with Jeni Iannetta of Bad Girl Bakery, who is originally from Kirkton, Dundee, on Sunday afternoon from 4.30 to 5.30 p.m. at Braw Tea Cafe in Broughty Ferry. Renowned Scottish baker Nigella Lawson holds the baker in high esteem and has left lovely reviews about her cookbook and baked goods online. The baker owns locations in Muir of Ord and Inverness.

The Eden Project, a social enterprise bringing Eden to Dundee, has set a challenge for local school children to create sustainable packed lunches. The kids will construct a picnic they can bring to the festival and enjoy using the information and abilities they have learnt in the classroom.

Attendees, at Dundee Food Festival, the will be inspired by talks and lectures given by prominent scientists from Abertay University, the James Hutton Institute, and the University of Dundee, organised by local organisations. Award-winning chef Dean Banks from Arbroath will speak about sustainability and take questions from the public at Temple Lane, one of the city’s newest cocktail bars.

City Council Fair Work, Economic Growth and Infrastructure Convener Councillor Steven Rome, said: “I am very encouraged that so much progress is being made to deliver the first Dundee Food Festival. Excitement will no doubt continue to build in the lead-up to July and I hope that the range of attractions on offer will prove to be popular.”

The Dundee Food Festival has a strong emphasis on sustainability and encourages physical activity through partnerships like Dundee Cycle Hub, which hosts events at the Waterfront.

The purpose of the Dundee Food Festival is to celebrate the city’s and the region’s culinary heroes, promote community involvement, and showcase the local larder. High-quality food and drink are plentiful in Dundee, and the city is within 30 miles from 70% of Scotland’s fresh produce.

It is also on a quest to become more environmentally conscientious, and all participating partners are expected to sign up to the festival’s Sustainability Charter, which emphasises utilising more locally grown produce, cutting back on plastic use, and wasting less food.

City Council Climate, Environment & Biodiversity Committee Convener Heather Anderson, added: “We are placing a strong emphasis on sustainability and the local reaction so far has been extremely heartening.”

Throughout the event, a variety of nearby companies will take part by hosting and planning to-be-announced food-focused events. The festival has been organised in association with the Dundee City Council, Eat and Drink Dundee, Eden Project, V&A Dundee, and James Hutton Institute, among other local partners.
